I Like The Pope The Pope Smokes Dope

Classic T-shirts, weren't they?

I don't know him well, but I'm going to assume that this comment springs forth from his overflowing cup of love for all humanity.

He looks at us, poor secular fools, and he realises that without his help, we're all destined to hell.

And because of his deep wellspring of compassion and love for us all, he wants to save us from this fate.

He wants, instead, for us to live in the peace, harmony, and truth of the Catholic Faith.

Isn't that nice of him? It's so nice, I'm almost willing to forget all that Daily Mail nonsense about how every Priest in the world is a paedo. After all, the Daily Mail said it, so it's definitely not true anyway.

Yep, the Pope is a great bloke. I'm delighted that he's come out in defense of us poor secular fools.

It's good, too, that there can be no questioning his motivation. After all, his own interests clearly aren't served by the propping-up of a long-outdated, ignorant, fundamentally-flawed world view. Are they?

Oh wait. They are. Shame.

I guess he is a twat after all.

To be fair (and I'm not a Catholic remember), urging the UK not to "pursue aggressive secularism" is not at all the same thing as urging us all to become Christians. I think he means - don't banish religious opinion from public life. In other words, faith is not just a private thing, it affects what we think and say about politics, business, ethics, war, law etc etc. And I agree with him.

I suppose my opinion, as an atheist, is "why should it?"

I like a lot of the moral framework of Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism...but I don't want them to have some kind of special sway over the public life you mention just because they're "from God".

I kind of agree Phil, that Christians shouldn't have a privileged place as a hangover from a bygone era. So let's disestablish the CofE by all means. But if aggressive secularism means "You're a Christian so you have no right to express an opinion. Shut up." then I'm with the pope.

Basically I thought your post wasn't very well thought out :-)

Christians have every right to express an opinion. They just don't have a right to expect it to get special treatment.

And sure, my post wasn't well thought out. I just know I want to throw mud at the Pope.
